What is ShapeLine
ShapeLine is a probiotic supplement. You may have heard of it because it’s been getting quite a bit of media attention.
The media hasn’t latched onto it because it’s probiotic. Let’s face it, probiotics are about as exciting as a pot of yogurt.
All the noise stems from the fact the company behind it is saying ShapeLine is a probiotic that helps you to lose weight.
Obesity is an issue for a lot of people these days. Even if you forget the clinically obese, there’s still plenty of people who are overweight, know it, and have a burning desire to do something about it.
That’s why every time there is a new weight loss study or the hint of a new prescription weight-loss drug, the media slaps down the story in black and white.
That’s a good way to sell papers. But is taking this new probiotic supplement really going to be a good way to burn excess flab?
The good news is there are studies that suggest it can work. There could be some biases though. All the studies to date have been organized by the company that’s presently distributing ShapeLine at a cost of almost £30 per box.
That’s a 30-day supply though. That makes ShapeLine considerably cheaper than many of the other supplements people are taking to lose weight.
What Does ShapeLine Do?
Dr Nigel Plummer says ShapeLine the first probiotic that offers proven weight loss alongside additional health improvements. He’s bound to be all fired-up about it though. It would be surprising if he wasn’t. He was head of the team that developed the product.
According to the manufacturer’s website, ShapeLine is the first microflora product that supports a “shapelier you.” However, push the sales pitch aside and you’re still looking at a product that contains the same line-up of bacteria strains as a typical probiotic yogurt.
It’s not just bacteria though. ShapeLine contains Vitamins C and D as well. Plummer and his team have tossed a little zinc in there too.
This trio of vitamins and minerals are great for boosting the health. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that supports your immune system and zinc boosts testosterone.
Testosterone isn’t just a man thing. Women need it too and one of the things it does is help burn fat and keep you nice and lean.
Menopausal women can reap the benefits of a god probiotic as well. Hot flashes, frequent night sweats, loss of libido and weight gain are just of the symptoms waiting for women in the 40’s and 50’s. Lactobacillus bacteria is one of the most beneficial probiotics for menopausal women’s health.
As for Vitamin D, it’s an important nutrient. Many people are deficient and lack of Vitamin D can cause you to gain weight.
Of course, you don’t have to pay much money to top-up on vitamins and minerals. Any decent pharmacy can probably sell you a bottle of pills for less than $5 a pop.
However, it’s important to be aware there is a little more going on with this ShapeLine supplement than first meets the eye.
Who Makes ShapeLine?
ShapeLine is manufactured and distributed by Pro-Ven Probiotics. It’s a British company, based in Wales.
Pro-Ven Probiotics is also responsible for developing a probiotic called Lab4, which is apparently the most-researched group of gut-friendly bacteria in the UK.
Lab4 is one of the key ingredients in ShapeLine, but it’s paired with another strain of bacteria called Lactobacillus plantarum. That may give the product added potency, but it also suggests Lab4 could be lacking in power.
With a name like Pro-Ven Probiotics, you probably won’t be surprised to hear probiotic products are the only products the company has.
Other probiotics in the ShapeLine range include a probiotic powder for women, one for children, and a Pregnancy-Plus option for expectant mothers.
Why is ShapeLine Suddenly Big News?
The media saw ShapeLine as a newsworthy topic after the results of a study were published in Scientific Reports. Participants in the study lost weight by taking only one capsule per day.
There’s another factor that appears to make the story good media fodder. The participants lost weight without trying to diet or do extra exercise.
Losing weight without hard work and sacrifice! It’s always been the impossible dream. It’s the kind of dream that sells newspapers too but many of the participants in the study had an average weight loss of around half a pound a month.
Although there can be exceptions, if you buy ShapeLine it’s probably going to be a case of slow and steady wins the race. Dr Plummer makes this clear stating, “If you are expecting to lose a stone in two months, this is not going to happen.”
So if you were soaring high on expectations, maybe that tit-bit of information will help bring you back down to earth.
However, if you forget all the ideas of miracle weight loss pills and easy rides, the truth of the matter is not so bad. Research suggests ShapeLine is a weight management product that can work. Just remember that it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to some work as well.
Who is ShapeLine For?
Unlike some of Pro-Ven Probiotics’ other products, ShapeLine is only for adults. It’s not for children. Although it’s being sold alongside the promise it can help you become a shapelier you, the product also offers additional benefits, such as better digestion. It may help lower your levels of bad cholesterol too.
Think of it as a probiotic first and a weight loss aid second. One of the other nice things about ShapeLine is you only have to remember to take your capsule once per day. Though it’s probably best to time your dose to coincide with a meal because you have to take it with food.
Although this is a probiotic product that’s strictly for adults, it may work better for people who are over 50-years old. It’s unclear why this should be but research to date certainly suggests it may be the case.
A Look at the Research
The original research was conducted in 2018. The data was promising, but the press either didn’t hear about it or choose to remain blissfully silent.
According to the Daily Mail, the recent study was the largest one of its kind. It may be right because 440 people took part. All of them took their one pill each day and none of them made any other changes to their lifestyle at all.
Yet, the ones who took the probiotic supplement lost weight and saw their waist grow a little smaller. The participants who were given the placebo didn’t show any reductions at all.
The original research was also interesting, even if the press didn’t blink an eye at the time.
All the participants had a body mass index BMI of 25 – 34.99. The ones at the lower end of the scale were overweight. The ones at the higher end were obese. As well as being overweight, many of them had issues with high cholesterol.
On this occasion, the probiotic group lost weight while the placebo did not. The average weight loss was just 3 lb, but some of the participants who were over 50 lost as much as 7 lb.
Another notable difference was regarding the cholesterol levels of the two groups. The probiotic successfully brought on a cholesterol reduction of around 8.6 percent.
The probiotic group also reported other benefits. There were less issues with respiratory infections and the number of headaches reported reduced by 30 percent.
The Role of Probiotic Bacteria
Probiotic products and supplements have been popular for quite a while. You only have to check out the chillers in any supermarket and you’ll find probiotic yogurts galore.
Consuming probiotic bacteria tops up bacteria levels in the gut. There’s a lot of bacteria in there anyway. It’s normal but there are two types.
One type is bad and the other is good. Probiotic bacteria like the bacteria in ShapeLine is the good type. It’s good because it fights the less desirable strains and keeps their numbers down. In so doing, it helps support good health.
One of the things the bad bacteria does is interfere with metabolism. When this happens it makes it easier for us to gain weight. It also makes it harder for us to lose it. A lot of people believe that probiotic bacteria helps you to stay slim by restoring healthy metabolism.
However, some people are saying one of the ways ShapeLine assists weight loss is by also increasing bile production. Either way, it’s the end results that count—even if the level of weight loss this product appears to support is less than dramatic.
Is ShapeLine better than eating a yogurt? That’s hard to say. It contains bacteria from the families Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. You can also get these from yogurt. They are in sauerkraut too.
Additional Information
The manufacturer is not saying this product can deliver rapid weight loss. In fact, Dr Plummer says the level of weight loss can slow down if you continue using his product for more than six months. He also points out the benefits may not hang around.
He says when you stop taking the product its beneficial effect will “dissipate.”
If you are new to probiotics, you also need to know there can be risks. Probiotics are not suitable for everyone and may even be dangerous to people who have impaired immune systems or certain other health problems.
If your health is poor, or you have any doubts about using a probiotic, including yogurts, the best thing to do is ask your doctor for advice.
